OUM student lauds research backed doctoral programme

New Sunday Times, Sunday, October 31, 2010

OPEN University Malaysia (OUM) is proud to have its first batch of seven PhD students graduating this November.  It is crowing achievement indeed not just for the university but also the student who have sweated and toiled to reach the pinnacle of academic success.

And because of OUM’s collaboration with the Université de La Rochelle (ULR) in France, Wong Siaw Ming will receive two doctoral scrolls, one from each university.  It is indeed a first for OUM and Wong, who will receive her PhD (Business Administration) at the university ‘s convocation next month.

The affable Wong, however, sees her achievement not as something to gloat about, but as an avenue to share her acquired knowledge.

“Learning is a lifelong process and we need to nurture a culture that embraces this value besides encouraging people to get a deeper understanding of their work.   Learning also allows us to engage in more intellectual debates in our daily lives.

“Only with knowledge will we be able to gain the exposure required to advance our society,” shares Wong, who is the managing director of a management consultancy firm in Kuala Lumpur.
